Civil Beat “Pop-Up” Newsrooms

Pop-Up Newsroom logoCivil Beat reporters and staff will be working out of various Hawaii State Public Libraries across the state. Come and learn more about how we do our jobs and talk to us about what stories you think need to be covered.

Civil Beat’s pop-up newsrooms are supported by the Hawaii Community Foundation and the League of Women Voters of Honolulu Education Fund.

New popups are added frequently so be sure to check back often!

Sustainable Food Policies in the 2024 Legislative Session

Representative Amy Perruso (District 46) and Daniela Spoto, Hawaii Appleseed’s Director of Food Equity and Anti-Hunger Initiatives will discuss the state of multiple food policies in front of the state legislature that may impact the health, equity, resilience and sustainability of Hawaii and its people.

Presented by The Hawaiʻi Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems at University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu, Honolulu Civil Beat, UH Better Tomorrow Speaker Series, and Waiwai Collective, this series is meant to generate key opportunities for community dialogue among a diverse audience, aiming to achieve a healthy, equitable, resilient and sustainable food system for Hawaiʻi.

Daniela Spoto – Director of Food Equity and Anti-Hunger Initiatives for Hawaii Appleseed

This panel discussion will be moderated by Civil Beat politics editor Chad Blair.

Hawaii Storytellers: Where I Live – Kona and Kohala

This storytelling event will feature community members from the Kona and Kohala side of Hawaii Island, and will take place at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on Friday, March 8, 2024. The event will be hosted by Civil Beat Editor-At-Large, Naka Nathaniel.

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. where you may register, participate in interactive activities and pre-purchase items at the concession stand. Entertainment provided by Dagan Bernstein will begin at 5:45 p.m. The official storyteller program will begin at 6:00 p.m.

If you can’t make it live, a free recording will be sent to everyone who registers.

Civil Beat invites you back to the Hawaii State Capitol for Civil Cafe: Legislative Update featuring a discussion with leaders of the House and Senate. This event will be recorded and sent to all those who have registered for the event.

Rep. Diamond Garcia, Rep. Gregg Takayama and Sen. Chris Lee will join Civil Beat Politics Editor Chad Blair to discuss what’s been going on during the legislative session.

Permit Pileup: A Q&A with Honolulu’s Mayor

Join us for a conversation with Civil Beat Reporter Christina Jedra and Mayor Rick Blangiardi as they discuss the current permit pileup at the Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting. This free event will be live-streamed and recorded. The recording will be sent to everyone who registers, including those who cannot make it live. Transcripts will be available by request following the event.

This event will be guided by questions pre-submitted from the audience. Send in your questions through this form or email them to membership@civilbeat.org.

This event will be held at the Civil Beat headquarters in Kaimuki, located on the second floor above Goodwill Hawaii. Parking is located within the building at 3650 Waialae Avenue, entrance on Wilhelmina Rise. Parking validation for up to 2 hours will be provided for all attendees.
